Joe Klock

Joe Klock may call himself a curmudgeon but I know better -- he's anything but. I met Joe through the Thought for the Day list. He sent in a couple of sayings, I wrote back to ask if they were original and if I could use them, and we've been talking on and off since. I recently read his interview with Amazon.com and found it hilarious, forthright, and beautifully crafted, just like the rest of his work. Here is an excerpt:

"Mr. Klock is 69 years old and somewhat over his fighting weight. He has been married for as long as he can remember, during which period he has accumulated one son and a daughter who are practicing attorneys, six other daughters who are going straight, nineteen grandchildren and luxurious waterfront homes in Coral Gables and Key Largo, complete with breathtaking views, exotic landscaping and thriving colonies of Palmetto Bugs.

"He is afflicted with distinguished creditors, highly influential enemies, a variety of menopausal ailments, athlete's foot and a hernia. (From some of these maladies, he has recovered.) He is long-winded on the platform, short-winded on the stairs, has absolutely no wholesome hobbies and is instinctively disliked by small dogs.

"Also, he drinks, swears, bites his fingernails and entertains impure thoughts - often simultaneously."

It is the very essence of good leadership to give away all credit for positive achievement, to identify only team goals and always to refer to them as such. -Joe Klock

Living to a ripe old age may not be one of humanity's great blessings, but to live with gusto at a ripe old age is to discover not only what life is about, but what it's always been about. -Joe Klock
