Kahlil Gibran (1883-1931) was a Lebanese-American writer, poet, and artist. He is best known for his book, The Prophet. His writings are highly romantic, influenced by the Bible, William Blake, and Friedrich Nietzsche.

Gibran was born in Bsharri, Lebanon on January 6, 1883. His family immigrated to Boston in 1895. He returned to Beirut to study in 1898, and then settled in New York City in 1912 where he wrote essays and short stories in both Arabic and English. He also paintings. His works are lyrical, expressing a deep, mystical spirituality.
