William Bridges

William Bridges, PhD, is the nation's leading consultant on transitions at work. His corporate clients include Pacific Bell, Intel, Kaiser Permanente, Proctor & Gamble, Hewlett-Packard, and McDonnell-Douglas. His book, Transitions, was recommended to me when I had to deal with a new disability and major career re-adjustment. It is a slim volume, but it is packed with helpful wisdom. One day I found myself at the surgeon's, describing myself as afloat in the middle of the ocean, knowing I needed to swim but not knowing which direction to head. I came home and picked up the book and there, in the next chapter, was that very description! I knew then that this book was going to be valuable in helping me deal with my situation. It does not offer any quick fixes, or tips, or even a 5-step program. What it does it re-assure you that transitions are a normal part of life, that they are supposed to be uncomfortable, and that you can learn to use the process as a springboard to making your life better than before, even when that seems impossible. If you are going through a transition - divorce, down-sizing, disability or health crisis, grief - this book is a must-read.
